Almost everything that happens at the warehouse happens because someone volunteered to do it. Volunteers gave 11,254 hours in the most recent year, more than double the average of the decade before it.

What volunteers do
- Truck drivers and jockeys
- Collecting furniture and goods donated by the public and bringing them back to the warehouse.
- Sorting crew
- Sorting, shelving or recycling the goods that arrive each day, and helping clients choose linen, blankets, clothing and kitchenware.
- Client support and warehouse assistants
- Loading and unloading, keeping the warehouse tidy, minor repairs, and looking after visiting agency workers and their clients.
- Electrical goods testers and appliance service
- Checking and servicing electrical items. WERN believes this service is close to unique among organisations like it, and it needs volunteers with the technical skills to do it.
- Administration assistants
- Data entry and reporting, booking selection and collection appointments, and answering enquiries.
What it involves
Hours are flexible. Volunteers negotiate times that suit them, and the warehouse asks only that you give notice when you cannot make a day you are down for.
You are given an orientation before you start. On duty, volunteers wear a WERN shirt or apron and a name badge. Closed footwear is required in the warehouse, so no sandals or open shoes.
